Conifers : Age/Condition or x Transplanted

Age/Condition

For young/small trees grown from seed, (seedlings and transplants) it is necessary to specify the age and condition of the tree. It is best to be precise and follow the designations indicated below which are internationally recognised.

Within these definitions the following conventions are followed

+ or / indicates transplanting

u or = indicates undercutting

Seedlings

Figure 1: 1+0 SEEDLING

Description Definition
1+0 A one year old seedling which has not been transplanted.
1/0
1+0= A one year old undercut seedling.
1/0=
1u1 A two year old seedling, undercut after one year but not transplanted from the seedbed.
2+0 A two year old seedling which has not been transplanted.
2/0
2u2 A four year old seedling, undercut after two years but not transplanted from the seedbed.

Transplants (Seedling Propagated)

Figure 2: 1+1 TRANSPLANT

Description Definition
1+1 or 1/1 2 year old seedling transplant; one year in seedbed, transplanted and grown on for one year
1+2 or 1/2 3 year old seedling transplant; one year in seedbed, transplanted and grown on for two years
2+1 or 2/1 3 year old seedling transplant, two years in seedbed, transplanted and grown on for one year
2+2 or 2/2 4 year old seedling transplant, two years in seedbed, transplanted and grown on for two years

No. of time Transplanted

Transplanting (or undercutting) encourages a compact and fibrous root system and enables the easier and more successful supply and establishment of plants. Conifers should be transplanted or undercut every two years.

Specimen conifers must be transplanted at least every four years. In exceptional circumstances a specimen can be sold five years after transplanting, but, if this is the case, it must be stated.

Number of times transplanted ( x transplanted)

Overall height No of times transplanted (x transplanted)
Up to 100 - 125 cm; dependent on species 2 - 4 times (2 - 4 x)
Over 125 cm; Specimen plants 4 - 6 times (4 - 6 x)
