General

The overall height is significant in the purchase of bamboos, although less significant than the root condition and the number of canes/culms/shoots which is to be expected for the plant of that size.

Bamboos can be divided into three groups:

Dwarf: e.g. Pleioblastus humilis var. pumilus (Arundinaria pumilus)
Medium: e.g. Fargesia murieliae 'Simba' (Arundinaria murieliae 'Simba')
Vigorous: e.g Fargesia murieliae (Arundinaria murieliae)

Bamboos are available rootballed or container grown. However mainly supplied container grown.

Root balled bamboos

Figure 1:ROOT BALLED BAMBOO
(Fargesia murieliae)

Dwarf : Height in cm.
15-20 40-60
20-30 60-80
30-40

Medium: Height in cm.
30-40 80-100
40-60 100-125
60-80 125-150
  150-175

Vigorous : Height in cm.
60-80 125-150
80-100 150-175
100-125 175-200

The most typical sizes are marked in bold type. Larger bamboos are available. The OVERALL HEIGHT and NO. OF BREAKS all increase in proportion.

Container grown bamboos

(Fargesia murieliae)

The following are the typical height or spread grades used for the supply of container grown bamboos. The actual grade is determined by the cultural conditions of the plant and the characteristics of the species/cv.

Height in cm: Type of bamboo
15-20 Dwarf
20-30
30-40 Medium
40-60 Vigorous
60-80 Vigorous
80-100
100-125
125-150
150-175

The most typical sizes are marked in bold type. Larger bamboos are available. The OVERALL HEIGHT, SIZE OF CONTAINER and NO. OF BREAKS all increase in proportion.
